AVMA Hopes to Add Pet Health Coverage to Your Employee Benefits In the Near Future
The American Veterinary Medical Association, or AVMA, is fighting to have pets health insurance included among employee’s pretax health benefits. This benefit would join a list of pretax options including group term life, medical, accident, and disability insurance, and adoption assistance. The AVMA is asking Congress to pass legislation amending Section 125 of the Internal Revenue Service Code to include pet health insurance among these so-called cafeteria plans. The organization feels that it will be beneficial to help pet owners, which comprise over 60% of the population, defray the cost of veterinary care and that the benefits of suporting this option will outweigh the costs.
