Country Make Look to Mass as Model for Change

Mass has achieved that which the country has been clamoring for, near universal coverage. They claim to have come to that goal through what they call “incremental universalism.” By allowing people who were happy with their coverage to keep it, and focusing on insuring those in categories that are traditionally difficult to insure by providing tax credits and employing other methods to reach those difficult groups, Mass has proven itself to be worthy of modeling. However, critics are quick to point out the inherently high cost of these endeavors. While it is great to be able to say that over 90% of your residents have health insurance, how high of a price is our country willing and able to pay? Can we model the country’s reform on Mass’s system while finding ways to manage the costs?
