Do People Really Know Their Health Insurance?

An alarming number of people have no idea what their health insurance covers until they have to use it and find out that it isn’t as comprehensive as they thought it might be. Most people sign up for a policy without taking the time to really understand, and critics of the industry say that insurance companies make things purposefully confusing and misleading so that people believe they are getting one thing, when they are actually getting something else. The average consumer does not have the industry knowledge to succeed in purchasing a quality health insurance  plan, and reform advocates are pushing for legislation that would make the process clearer and more easy to understand.  If consumers were able to make more educated choices and become smart shoppers, would this enable competition among insurance providers which would lead to lowered prices?
