Health Insurance as Prevention
The recent outbreak of the Mexican based swine flu is prompting a wave of preventative measures to protect those which may come in contact with the deadly disease. The flu has killed fifty seven people in Mexico, and there is now one confirmed death in the United States as a result of the epidemic. Health officials are working fevereshly to control the spread of the disease, and while there is not currently a vaccine for this particular strain, officials are recomending the standard flu vaccine which may provide at least partial protection against the disease. At least 35,000 Americans reportedly due from influenza each year, mostly affecting the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. However, the current outbreak has affected young, otherwise healthy adults in Mexico. Since flu vaccinations are covered by most health insurance plans, why don’t more people in America receive the vaccination each year?
