Massachusetts Find Universal Health Care Costly
As proud as Massachusetts officials were to have one of the lowest rates of uninsured citizens in the nation with their nearly universal health care system, they are now facing the reality of how costly that bragging right is. Because the initial efforts which began three years ago were followed by rapid enrollment and a now slowing economy, Massachusetts is now facing a very large bill which experts say means that the health care system will not be sustainable in 5 or 10 years if efforts are not made to decrease health care costs and spending. State governors are targeting their efforts on a new way to pay providers which would reward them for preventative care and other measures which reduce health care costs. If this were achieved, Massachusetts would again prove to be a revolutionary in the realm of health insurance. Do you think that they can make the system work, or will they just end up in over their heads?

I think rewarding providers is a great idea. Currently our doctors get paid to keep people sick, not rewarded for making someone healthy.

It is costly to insure everyone and that requires healthy revenues. Working on reducing costs will certainly pay off when revenues rebound, but the uncertainty of what requirements may be in the as yet to be determined federally-mandated health program may also put the skids on new State initiatives.
All of this will not be worked out fully for some time. We’ll just have wait and see.

I don’t think they will be able to fix the problem due to the issues in today’s economy. Unfortunetly, we don’t know what this country will be like in 5 to 10 years, but at this rate, it doesn’t look good.
