Outsourcing Healthcare

Ok, so lots of things are less expensive overseas than they are here in the states, but who would have thought of going to India for surgery. Apparently when the price tag there is about $30,000 to $40,000 less, not counting the cost of your plane ticket. As good as this sounds, many insurance companies are reluctant to cover this. Issues that stop insurance companies from supporting these endeavors include credentialing issues of medical providers overseas, as well as issues of legal recourse. A few providers have been brave enough to dabble in the so-called “medical tourism” such as Blue Cross and Blue Shield of South Carolina, and others may be persuaded to look into it. What do you think of outsourcing health care? What kind of long term effects could this have?

kinda scary…it begs the question-are we headed to the same thing with health care as a lot of phone companies and many other jobs that are priced better overseas?

    Doesn’t sound good to me.

No way! We cannot outsource health care, I would think that would be one of the very last things we would want to outsource. Are there studies showing the quality of care or results of these surgeries ovesees?

I would be very skeptical going overseas to have a surgery done. Why is it so so much cheaper? Are they not going to take care of me the same way as here in the states? Don’t think I will be venturing off to India to get my liposuction surgery.

I agree with Kirsten. Furthermore, let’s say you need major surgery. You are sent or go to to India for it. The cost of the medical care and airfare are far less that having it done here (for you or for your corporation). The surgeon makes a mistake. What recouse do you have. NONE. Who in their right mind would run that risk.
