Stimulus Package to Place Health Care Within Reach
For people who have lost their jobs and are hit with the financial hardship of being without a normal income, the last thing they need is to worry about skyrocketing health insurance costs. Unfortunately, this is exactly what happens in most situations. COBRA, the health insurance quotes available to people for 18 months after becoming unemployed, is extremely expensive and eats up a large portion of unemployment benefits. This may change if the proposed stimulus package is passed, which would subsidize COBRA premiums for the next nine months. For example, a policy which would have cost over $700 a month would now cost a little over $200, placing it much more in reach of those trying to make it on unemployment benefits alone. Will nine months be long enough for the nation to get back on its feet, or will the government end up needing to extend this program?
