The Choice Between Saving and Having Health Insurance

A recent study in Colorado shows that when families are forced to cut back on expenses, they will do so in almost every area except health insurance. In order to be able to afford a family health insurance plan, most families were shown to forgo saving money and/or spending money on other necessities. This may prove a dangerous situation if job loss or some other emergency occurs and the family has no savings to draw upon. This lack of savings also threatens the family’s ability to pay for higher education expenses and other things which can damage the long term survival of members of the family. Lawmakers would like to see major reform, perhaps basing insurance costs on income via a sliding scale. Is that fair? What other options are there?
