Wisconsin BadgerCare to Thank for Low Rate of Uninsureds

The state of Wisconsin enjoys a relatively low rate of uninsured citizens thanks in part to its program aimed at helping low income working families called BadgerCare. Wisconsin is 7th on the list of states with the smallest number of uninsured citizens, with only about 26% of people having gone without coverage at some point during the period of 2007 to the end of 2008. Many feel that the state’s BadgerCare Program is more generous than most, which allows for a bigger safety net. However, there is fear that the current recession will negatively affect the state’s standings as more people lose their jobs and COBRA is expensive. The hope is that reform will help the health insurance situation before numbers can slide too far in the wrong direction. Will Wisconsin be able to maintain its high rankings in the coming years?
